Overview
Ludshott Common covers 285 hectares (705 acres) and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) due to its wildlife. For centuries, it was used by local commoners whose ancient rights allowed them to graze their cattle, sheep, ponies and pigs. Some commoners collected heather, gorse, wood and bracken for fuel, winter fodder and animal bedding. These activities led to the open heathland you can see here today.
Location
Headley Road, HEADLEY DOWN, GU26 6JJ
About the area
Hampshire’s varied landscape of hills and heaths, downlands and forests, valleys and coast are without rival in southern England. Hike across the chalk downland of the north Hampshire ‘highlands’, meander along peaceful paths through unspoilt river valleys of the Test, Itchen, Avon and Meon, or explore the lonely salt marshes and the beautiful medieval forest and heathland of the New Forest.
