Blackburn Cathedral

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Blackburn’s handsome cathedral was the town’s parish church until 1926, when its status was elevated. The current building mostly dates to the early 19th century, and was designed by John Palmer. The distinctive modern, octagonal lantern tower was added by architect Laurence King in 1961, with a dramatic crown of thorns hanging inside, above the sanctuary. The cathedral became the focus for the regeneration of the town centre in the early 21st century, creating a Cathedral Quarter and new buildings for church offices.
