Harlaxton Manor

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Built in pale Ancaster stone, this wonderfully ornate 1830s mansion is approached via a perfectly straight mile-long drive that goes over a bridge and under a gatehouse to reach its stunning destination. Harlaxton was owned by Gregory Gregory, a wealthy Nottinghamshire businessman, who built it to replace the original Elizabethan manor house in Harlaxton village. Gregory travelled all over Europe looking for furniture and works of art with which to fill this lovely house, which is now owned by the US University of Evansville, who use it as their British campus. To visit you must book a guided tour, highlights of which include the beautiful grounds with their French-style garden terraces and Dutch ornamental canal. There is also a 6.5-acre walled garden to explore - one of the largest in Britain.
Location
HARLAXTON, NG32 1AG
About the area
Much of the fenland around the Wash has been drained of its marshes and reclaimed as highly productive farmland. Further north, the coastline, with its sandy beaches, has been developed to accommodate the holiday industry, with caravans, campsites and the usual seaside paraphernalia.
