Gunby Hall and Gardens (NT)
Overview
Standing in eight acres of gardens, Gunby Hall, dating from 1700, was the home of the Massingberd family, who had connections with Tennyson, Darwin and Vaughan-Williams. The latter, who was a cousin of Lady Diana Massingberd, played the Bluthner grand piano in the oak-panelled Music Room. A William and Mary mansion with three floors to explore, the house is on a pleasantly homely scale rather than an imposing one, but its rooms are stuffed with artworks including three paintings by Joshua Reynolds, landscapes by Edward Lear, a host of pre-Raphaelite paintings and silverware, ceramics and furniture amassed by the Massingberd family over the centuries. The grounds include a glorious cherry walk, at its best in spring, the famous Gunby tulips, well-stocked greenhouses and landscaped formal gardens. There's a good tearoom and you can buy plants raised in the greenhouses and secondhand books from the basement shop.
About the area
Much of the fenland around the Wash has been drained of its marshes and reclaimed as highly productive farmland. Further north, the coastline, with its sandy beaches, has been developed to accommodate the holiday industry, with caravans, campsites and the usual seaside paraphernalia.
