Wallington

Overview
Set amid a 13,000-acre estate, Wallington is the fascinating home of Sir Charles Trevelyan, Socialist MP and ‘illogical Englishman’. A highlight of the house is the spectacular central hall, created when the original open courtyard was roofed over in the 1850s. Pre-Raphaelite artist William Bell Scott created eight large wall paintings recording 2,000 years of local history. The library, drawing room and dining room have beautiful plasterwork decoration by Pietro Lafranchini. Each room is a treasure trove of curiosities, and the house is surrounded by acres of lawns, lakes, woodland and farmland, with a hidden walled garden, colourful scented borders and an Edwardian conservatory. Kids will enjoy playing wild in the West Wood with its three separate play areas, visiting the wildlife hide and spotting rare red squirrels. The new Dragon Cycle Trail is suitable for riders of all abilities and is ideal for enjoying the views across Northumberland. There’s a great café, shop and plant centre. About the area
If it’s history you’re after, there’s heaps of it in Northumberland. On Hadrian’s Wall you can imagine scarlet-cloaked Roman legionaries keeping watch for painted Pictish warriors while cursing the English weather and dreaming of home.
