Overview
Flanders Moss NNR, 10 miles west of Stirling, is one of Britain’s largest intact raised bogs. Extending over three square miles, it is a habitat of international importance. From a distance or from the 23ft-high viewing tower, you can make out the domes of peat as they rise gently from the surrounding bog. Closer up, squelchy mats of lime-green sphagnum moss carpet the reserve, and in summer, adders and lizards can be seen basking in the sunshine. Feel the slight shudder of the peat as it quakes beneath your feet, and listen out for the distinctive calls of snipe and the chatter of summer migrant stonechats. You can explore this exciting habitat at any time of year. You’ll find frogs and toads in spring, reptiles in summer, and visiting geese in the autumn and winter. Use the all-abilities circular path and boardwalk to explore the bog in safety and without damaging this most precious and fragile of habitats.
