Walk directions

Head up Victoria Road and turn right along Titus Street. Turn right at the end, down Albert Road, turning left near the bottom along Albert Avenue. At the far end, take the footpath across the recreation ground, then turn right down Hirst Lane, crossing a railway bridge. After passing a coffee shop, head through the Hirst Wood car park.

Pass through a metal kissing gate into woodland. Keep left when the track forks after 100yds (91m), ignoring lesser paths that stray off to either side. When the trail branches in three directions, stay with the central option. Various tracks eventually converge and gently descend to a junction, where you turn right, to the canal tow path.

About the walk

‘I hope to draw around me a population that will enjoy the beauties of this neighbourhood – a population of well fed, contended, happy operatives’. So said mill entrepreneur Titus Salt, embarking on a scheme to build an idealistic village around his giant mill on the banks of the River Aire. Salt... was born in Morley in 1803 and left school to learn the skills of buying and selling wool. As the trade expanded, his father moved the family to Bradford, where Salt’s career took off. He soon owned five mills around the city and made his fortune when he spotted the potential for spinning alpaca wool to produce a fine quality worsted cloth. Salt was one of a handful of textile barons who sought to better the lives of their workforces. In the mid-19th century, the majority of Bradford’s textile workers endured appalling conditions. The boom in the industry had seen a migration of people into a city that lacked the infrastructure to support them. Salt realised the benefits of a happy, healthy workforce. He began by taking his workers – up to 2,000 of them – on day trips into the Yorkshire Dales. But he had a greater vision in which his mills would be consolidated into one, at the heart of a new community. He chose his site specifically for its proximity to the waters of the Aire, needed for production, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, for distribution. Construction began in 1851 and when it opened on September 20, 1853 – Salt’s 50th birthday – most of the 3,500 guests were employees. Salt next set his architects to designing an entire village for his workforce. Albert Terrace was first to go up and the building of good quality housing continued for another 15 years. Salt provided shops, a church, schools, a club and institute for social and educational use, an infirmary… everything a town might need, other than pubs, which he saw as a source of social evil. On his death at his mansion at Crow Nest in Lightcliffe, near Halifax, in December 1876, his body was borne by procession to the family mausoleum at Saltaire Congregational Church. It’s estimated that 100,000 people lined the route. Today, the village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the regenerated mill is home to shops, an art gallery devoted to the work of Bradford artist David Hockney, and many more attractions. Saltaire Mill, renamed Salt’s Mill, is a remarkable memorial to a remarkable social pioneer.

Turn left, over an aqueduct, after which the path drops to the left, then right, to run between walls past a converted canal warehouse and cottages, where it becomes a roughly surfaced track. After rounding Ivy House, bear right to cross a canal bridge.

Bear right along the tow path, canal on one side and the River Aire on the other, for 1.4 miles (2.25km), until you reach Saltaire, where Titus Salt’s Congregational Church, his final resting place, stands on the opposite side of the canal. Leave the tow path by an Airedale Greenway information board and cross the bridge over the canal, continuing up Victoria Road back to the start of the walk.
