Norfolk Coast Path: Thornham to Burnham Deepdale
The coast path makes a brief detour inland. Walk east through the village of Thornham, towards Titchwell, and turn right up the lane signposted to Choseley.
You now face a steady climb and gentle descent of 1.25 miles (2km) in all until the familiar coast path sign points left off the road by a small plantation. To the west is Beacon Hill, occupied since Neolithic times and once a Roman signal station.
Continue along the edge of a couple of fields and soon the path becomes a broad track. The path continues over the crossroads and then over a second small road to Titchwell, and then itself turns left towards the coast again. Now there are skylarks singing overhead, and once more there are fine views of the sea beyond Titchwell, where the Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve, in the safe hands of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, boasts many fine and rare species of bird and plant life. The path itself descends past ancient barns to Brancaster.
At Brancaster, the route crosses over the main road and then makes its way along the edge of the marsh. Conditions can be wet and muddy along this stretch, though a boardwalk now handily carries walkers over the vast majority of it. Continue towards the site of the Roman fort of Branodunum. Â
Brancaster is also the site of a fine golf course, part of the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, and the path to the course affords fine views of the creeks.
The next point of interest is the village and harbour of Brancaster Staithe. The route then runs almost imperceptibly into the small village of Burnham Deepdale, the first of five (once seven) villages with the prefix Burnham. Before embarking on the next stage of the journey, you would do well to investigate the fascinating Saxon Church of St Mary’s, with its superb and famous font whose carvings illustrate the months of the year by depicting life on the land.
