Walk up Main Street and turn left after the church. Walk across fields, turn right and left then join a track which climbs back onto the Wolds. A series of well-marked left and right turns crosses the familiar open countryside to reach the B1249 Scarborough–Driffield road. Continue straight across on the private road to RAF Staxton Wold, a radar defence station which first opened in 1939.
The road turns right by the RAF base, and at High Farm it becomes a track. Descend, then climb steeply left and cross Flixton Wold. Dip into two valleys before climbing out to the minor road from Flixton to Fordon.
Turn right for 400yds (365m), then left to descend alongside a low earthwork. Drop into Camp Dale, turn right, then follow the markers up and along the shoulder above the valley. Descend again by a wood and swing left to a valley junction.
At this point, the Centenary Way goes right to find a different route to Filey, while the Yorkshire Wolds Way turns left up Stocking Dale. At Long Plantation the path turns right, passing Stockendale Farm to reach the Flixton–Hunmanby road.
Continue straight ahead on a route with extensive views along the coast. After about 0.5 miles (800m) bear right at a hedge-gap, crossing fields to reach the A1039 Staxton–Filey road just outside Muston. Take care on the short stretch into the village as the verges are narrow and in places non-existent.
Walk through the village then bear left at a sign for Village Hall and go up to the right end of a terrace of houses. Walk through fields to the A165 Scarborough–Bridlington road. Go straight across and continue ahead, following a hedge to a footbridge. Turn right to the main road into Filey.
Turn left and walk down the road and over the railway crossing to a roundabout. The most pleasant way to reach Filey Brigg is to turn left at the roundabout. Bear slightly right at the next roundabout along Church Street and cross a ravine on a footbridge.
Turn right on the path alongside the churchyard wall, to keep the wooded ravine on your right. Follow the top path and swing left along the cliff-top. Steps lead across the small valley above the Sailing Club. This is a popular place for birdwatchers to shelter, hoping to spot rare migrants. Continue above the cliffs to reach the marker stone on the neck of Filey Brigg.
This final stage begins by recapitulating the now-familiar themes of the Wolds: wide-open fields and incised dry valleys. But soon the character changes, as the land tilts down to the east and the sea views open up. Scarborough Castle stands out to the North, while to the South is the vertical... profile of Bempton Cliffs, an important nesting site for birds such as gannet, kittiwake and puffin. It’s an RSPB reserve. Ahead lies Filey: the end of the walk is now in sight. The Filey North Cliff Country Park is to the left as the cliff-top path follows round to reach the dramatic promontory of Filey Brigg. Here you will find a stone sculpture, carved with the National Trail symbol of an acorn. It marks the end of the superb Yorkshire Wolds Way and also the Cleveland Way National Trail.The seaside resort of Filey has miles of sandy beaches, a country park and several other attractions.
