Cholsey and Agatha Christie
From Ilges Lane in the centre of Cholsey, with Tesco Express (which contains the post office) on your right turn right, passing a telephone box. Keep left at a mini roundabout, along Church Road, signposted to St Mary’s Church. Pass St Laurence Hall, then the village primary school and go over the railway bridge. Bear left beyond it into the church car park and enter the churchyard.
Make for the far right corner, pass the grave of Agatha Christie and Sir Max Mallowan and look for a stile leading onto farmland. Turn right, head for some barns and keep the buildings of Manor Farm over to the right. Turn left in front of the barns and follow a track across the fields. Further on it passes between rows of trees and over the railway. From the bridge look to your left and you can make out Cholsey station nearby. Pass Lees Cottages and several corrugated barns.
Continue on the track and when it bends right, head straight on, following a grassy track towards a line of trees. Make for the field corner and turn left, skirting the field with trees on the right. Cross a wooden footbridge spanning a stream and continue with trees, bushes and a ditch on the right and a field on the left. On reaching the railway embankment, with a stream on your right, pass under the main line via Bulls Hole. Beyond it looms the branch line of the much quieter Cholsey and Wallingford railway.
Don’t go under the next line but bear left immediately before it to follow the footpath running alongside the railway. The main line is close by on the left and you are likely to see and hear trains on this stretch. Continue through a galvanised kissing gate, skirting the field. St Mary’s church at Cholsey edges back into view across the farmland. Cross a footbridge to a galvanised gate and go diagonally across the pasture towards the church. Pass through a gate into the churchyard, following the signposted Roman Way, bear right to the car park and the road and turn right, returning to the centre of Cholsey where the walk began.
