Wealdway: Horsebridge to Wilmington
From the sadly dilapidated entrance to Horsebridge Mill, cross Upper Horsebridge Road with care and go straight on along London Road. Turn first right up Anglesey Avenue and continue until the end, turning right along Hempstead Lane. At the roundabout, go straight ahead along Brunel Drive to the A22. Cross this dual carriageway with great care and bear right. After 50yd (46m), turn left over a stile by a Wealdway waymarker.
Beyond the A22 dual carriageway, a rather devious headland path makes its way between cultivated fields. There are waymarks and stiles at regular intervals but it is easy to miss the way.
Beyond a footbridge at grid ref. TQ566097, the route crosses a large field with no clear sight line to guide the walker. After another 0.5 miles (800m), the Wealdway crosses the Cuckmere once more, using a solid brick bridge. After a second bridge, across the feeder stream for the moat surrounding
Michelham Priory, a field path continues to reach the road beside the Village Shop and Café at Upper Dicker. To visit Michelham Priory, use a short footpath which leaves the Wealdway at grid ref. TQ557095. At the road, turn left.
After about 0.25 miles (400m) along the road, the next path starts almost opposite the Plough Inn. After a low summit, the Wealdway converges on the Cuckmere and joins a bridleway to cross the river at Sessingham Bridge (grid ref. TQ544082).
After a few yards along this enclosed track, a stile on the right and a rising path across pasture leads on towards Arlington’s church spire. The tiny flint church at Arlington has Saxon origins but incorporates Roman fragments and later additions, none more recent than the 15th century. Nearby, the Yew Tree Inn provides a convenient refreshment stop, and there is a small car park. The bumps in the field beyond the church remind us that a much larger village once stood on this site. The Wealdway keeps forging straight ahead across rough ground and on via an access drive to the road near Chilver Bridge. The path to the right leads over a footbridge to Arlington reservoir, where there is another car park and a pleasant perimeter path.
Beyond the road, the Wealdway continues beside the Cuckmere, with the first clear view ahead to the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, 2 miles (3km) away as the crow flies, on the steep slope of Windover Hill. A bridleway heads south, crossing the railway and then the A27, where you should follow the road, opposite, signposted to Milton Street.
A well-trodden path on the left takes the Wealdway through to Wilmington village street. For The Giant’s Rest pub, or a bus into Eastbourne, turn left out to the A27. The village car park is at the southern end of the village, beyond the church and priory.
