West Highland Way: Inveroran to Kings House
After a mile (1.6km) or so along the road, you cross Victoria Bridge. The next section of the route follows the first motor road over to Glen Coe. The track is excellent all the way, but for 8 miles (13km) there is no shelter of any kind, and the track reaches 1,500ft (450m). In poor weather it is a considerable test: and the annual rainfall here is around 120 inches (3000mm). There are no escape routes, so once you have started you must either press on or turn back. That said, in good weather conditions this is a walk to be relished for the superb scenery and the sense of wildness.
There is a long, steady pull up from Forest Lodge to the rise between Beinn Toaig and the smaller Meall Beag to the east. Here you pass into Highland Region for the rest of the walk. You cross a watershed: streams ahead of you flow east into the Tay system, rather than southwest to Loch Etive.
As the track continues, a large corrie opens up on the west (left). This is Corrie Ba (‘corrie of the cattle’). On a good day there can be few finer places than Ba Bridge to stop for a rest and a brew-up, with the Blackmount Hills soaring above, and the river gurgling down towards Loch Ba in the heart of the moor. Odd to reflect then that this was the route of the motor road up to the mid-1930s.
The path continues past Ba Cottage, once a drovers’ stance but long since abandoned, to the summit of this section at 1,450ft (442m). The A82 is seen below as you pass around the flanks of Meall a’ Bhuiridh (‘hill of roaring’ – another reference to the stags) to the neat whitewashed Blackrock Cottage, a climbers’ hut.
The walk continues down the road serving the skiing car park to cross the A82, last seen at Bridge of Orchy, and over to the Kings House Hotel.
If there is the time and energy, a scramble up behind Kings House to the summit of Beinn a’ Chrulaiste gives the very best view of Buachaille Etive Mor in the evening light. Beinn a’ Chrulaiste (‘the rocky hill’) can be climbed without difficulty from either Kings House or Altnafeadh, which is where the path is now heading.
