Around Fonthill
With your back to the lay-by, turn right along the road (this can be busy) that traverses Fonthill Park beside the lake for just over 0.5 miles (800m). Pass beneath the magnificent stone arch and shortly bear right to the B3089. Keep to the right along the pavement into the pretty village of Fonthill Bishop.
Turn right just beyond the bus shelter on to a metalled track. After a few paces, turn left on to a waymarked bridleway through the Old Dairy. Keep left and join the track that winds uphill towards woodland. Follow the grassy track beside Fonthill Clump and keep to the main track above the valley. In 0.5 miles (800m) fork right downhill into Little Ridge Wood.
Begin to ascend and at a T-junction turn left and keep left at the next two junctions, following the wide path to a gate and lane. Turn right through the hamlet of Ridge. Pass the telephone box, walk uphill and bear off right, following the signposted footpath along the drive to Fonthill House.
1n 0.25 miles (400m), fork left with the footpath sign to follow a track between paddocks and through a gateway. In 200yds (183m), fork right with a yellow arrow and walk beside woodland. On entering an open field, turn left along the field-edge, turning right at the corner and keeping the hedge on your left to gradually descend towards woodland.
Walk down through the woods (steep in parts). Bear left, then right along a gravel track beside Fonthill Lake. Cross the weir to a gate. Disregard the track which goes ahead uphill and bear off right along the lakeside edge. Follow the well-established path through a gate, eventually returning to the parking area.
