Overbeck's

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Built in 1913, this Edwardian-style house was bought by inventor and scientist Otto Overbeck in 1928, having been used as a convalescent home for WWI soldiers from 1915 to 1919. Believed to be the last living relative of the Dutch Overbeke family, one of Otto’s most successful inventions was the rejuvenator, an electric device that enabled people to treat their own illnesses and ailments – such as baldness and poor eyesight – at home. Sales of the rejuvenator, which would have retailed for about £350 today, made him a wealthy man and he spent his money on filling the house with the eccentric and interesting collections that you can see today. Outside, clinging to the cliffs above Salcombe, is Overbeck’s amazing subtropical garden featuring plants from all corners of the world, such as palm trees, banana plants, citrus and olive trees. There’s a great shop and café.
