Dymchurch Martello Tower
Overview
Between 1805 and 1812, faced with the threat of invasion by Napoleon, the British government built a chain of ‘Martello towers’ – small defensive forts – around the south and east coasts of England. Dymchurch Martello Tower on the Kent coast is one of these ingeniously designed artillery towers, where the garrison lived on the first floor above the ammunition and storerooms. It has been restored to its original design and re-equipped with its cannon.
