Caerlaverock Castle and the Solway Merses
Exit the car park and turn right on to a farm road. Follow this past the farms of Newfield and Midtown then turn left and go past a bungalow and some houses. Just before you reach the farm of Hollands there is a waymarker pointing to a car park, on the right, and straight ahead for walks. Go straight ahead and continue to the farm steading, then turn left.
Go through a kissing gate and on to a farm track. This stretches away into the distance and has high hedges on both sides. Continue along this track between the hedges, through another kissing gate and on, until you reach a boardwalk. Then turn immediately right following the yellow waymarker. Follow the boardwalk to the end at the Merse.
A sign here informs visitors that regulated wildfowling (shooting) takes place between 1 September to 20 February. Do not cross the stile but turn right along a grassy track through the grass along the edge of the merse. The path can be very boggy at all times and the grass will be high in the summer.
Follow this path, which can be boggy in parts, all the way along the Merse with Criffel ahead, until you reach a bridge. Just after the bridge there is a nature observation post among the high reeds. Cross the bridge and continue to the boardwalk. At the end of the boardwalk, reach a bird hide with information and identification boards. Turn right at the hide and right again, heading along a stony path.
Go through the woods, passing some cottages on the left. The path meanders through the woodland until it reaches the old castle, which has been excavated and has information boards explaining the ruins.
Turn left around the old castle and then right over a bridge to go through a wood with nature trail information boards to Caerlaverock Castle. There is a children's playground, a siege machine and picnic tables around the ramparts of the castle.
At the far end go through an arch and continue to the T-junction with a country lane. Turn right and continue for about a mile (1.6km), then turn right on to another lane signposted 'Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve'. Continue on this road past the farms of Northpark, Newmains and Nethertown and then back to the car park at Eastpark.
