Portsmouth Cathedral

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Founded on the site of a 12th-century chapel built to honour the newly martyred Thomas a Beckett, this vast cathedral owes much of its modern appearance to remodelling in the 16th and 17th centuries. This includes the wooden cupola on the central tower, which was added in 1703, with a light to aid shipping. When its status as Portsmouth’s Anglican cathedral was announced in 1927, further remodelling was planned and partially undertaken by Sir Charles Nicholson, but the interruption of World War II and a subsequent lack of funds meant it was not finally completed until 1991. Inside, high Byzantine-style arches supported on white stone pillars give a sense of light and airiness.
