Hospital of St Cross
Overview
A beautiful group of Grade I listed medieval and Tudor buildings, in a tranquil setting by the water meadows, St Cross is home to 25 elderly Brothers. In keeping with tradition, they wear gowns and trencher hats and act as visitor guides. The hospital is world-famous for its ancient and unique tradition of the Wayfarers Dole - a beaker of beer and a morsel of bread is given by the porter to all visitors who request it. Visitors can admire the medieval and Tudor architecture, explore the medieval hall, the Georgian kitchen and the Tudor cloister as well as the walled garden with many plants of American origin.
