Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
King Henry VIII commissioned this timber-framed hunting lodge in Epping Forest in 1542 and it was completed the following year. Three storeys high, it served as a viewing platform from which spectators could watch the hunt while taking part in lavish feasting. Foreign dignitaries and various noblemen and women would be invited here if they found themselves in favour with the royalty of the day. In Tudor times, the Lodge’s upper floors would have been open to the elements and on hunt days the building would be decorated with colourful flags and banners. Still surrounded by ancient woodland, the Lodge overlooks the old hunting field as it was originally designed to do. You can explore the Tudor kitchen and the King's shooting gallery and while looking at the staircase, contemplate the legend that Queen Elizabeth I rode her white horse up it to celebrate the victory over the Spanish Armada.
