Leiston Abbey

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
For hundreds of years this mostly 14th-century abbey – originally founded in 1182 – was used as a farm and its church became a barn. A Georgian house, now used as a school (Pro Corda) for young musicians, was built into its fabric and remains of the choir, the church transepts and parts of the cloisters still stand.
Features

  • Opening Times
  • Open all year
  • Opening Times: Open at any reasonable time

  • Facilities

Location
LEISTON, IP16 4TD
About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
