Orchardton Tower

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
A charming little circular tower house from the mid-15th-century, built in the 12th-century donjon style. It is not known why the owner used this old-fashioned circular style for a free-standing tower, but the builder is thought to be one John Cairns, who would probably have used it as a fortified family residence. The tower consists of a basement cellar, a hall and two upper floors with private chambers. Next to the tower are the ruins of a great hall, which would have been used for public functions.

About the area
Dumfries and Galloway is a wonderfully undiscovered corner of Scotland – a romantic land of wooded glens, high hills and exposed moorland, haunted by its colourful past and the ghosts of those who fell in fierce and bloody battles. Heading west from Gretna Green you soon reach Dumfries, straddling the River Nith, where you may see red-breasted mergansers in summer.
