Across the Sutton Sahara
With the Sorrel Horse behind you, turn right down Church Lane, passing a number of picturesque cottages. Look out for the crenulations and cross-shaped faux arrow slits of Tower Cottage as the lane turns abruptly right. Follow the lane and turn left along a footpath immediately after Tower Cottage. The path passes some allotments and soon begins to climb the right-hand side of a field between fences. Where the path turns sharp right, cross a stile and carry straight on across a field. The path may be indistinct or nonexistent, in which case simply head for the corner slightly to your right. As you enter the wood, bear left along a sandy track and then, almost immediately, straight ahead at a crossroads. Continue for another 750yds (686m), passing Hill Cottage on your left, and turn left at the next crossroads.
The path bends right and left to cross a stream and becomes a tarmac lane. To either side of the lane is land that is managed under a countryside stewardship scheme, to which walkers have free access. When the lane bends left at a group of farm cottages turn right to pass Abblitt’s Farm. Keep straight ahead at a junction by bungalows and turn left on a field-edge path that follows the line of the hedge to meet a road at Sutton village. Turn right and stay on the pavement past the Plough Inn.
Pass a sign for a church, then turn right on to a byway leading to Broxtead House. After 100yds (91m), turn left on a concrete track that becomes a sandy lane after passing Low Barn Farm. Turn left at a crossroads and stay on this path across the heathland of heather and bracken to reach a car park. Cross the car park to the right and take the path through the gate. Follow this path as it bears slightly right across the heath to enter the trees.
Turn right on to a crossing track and keep straight ahead through the woods to emerge at a clearing. Continue ahead with a field on your left, following the sandy track down and uphill and keep straight ahead at a sewage works. Ignore the gate to your right and continue ahead for another 0.75 miles (1.2km), passing through a gate and taking a farm track between fields.
Carry straight on at a major crossroads of paths with various waymarks, including one for the Sandlings Walk which you are leaving at this point. The path takes you past a large field on your left with tall bracken on your right. When you reach the trees continue ahead across a staggered crossroads, then shortly afterwards fork left through a gate. After 30yds (27m) keep right to follow the main track through gorse bushes and heather.
Pass through a double five-bar gate and fork right immediately afterwards to walk along the left-hand edge of a field. At a crossroads, before you reach the far trees, turn right to follow a restricted byway across the field. Immediately after passing the end of a spinney on your left-hand side fork left, ignoring the sharp left entrance into the field you’ve just passed. You’re now following a line of trees along the left-hand side of a field. Continue along the track as it bears to the right to cross the field.
At the far side, the track becomes a path continuing straight ahead through a gap in an unruly hedge. After a few yards, fork right with a field to your right and a wood to your left. Shortly after a path joins your path from the left, turn left through a small wooden gate by a fork and head uphill towards St Margaret’s church, passing an adventure playground on your right. Go through a gate to the left of the churchyard and after a few yards turn right into the churchyard. After popping in to look at the church, turn right as you leave to pass a bend and go down some steps to a road. Turn left and immediately on your left is the Sorrel Horse where this walk began.
