St Chad's Cathedral

Overview
St Chad’s is the city’s redbrick Roman Catholic cathedral, set in the former Gunmakers’ Quarter, and mother church of the Archdioscese of Birmingham. Dating back to 1839, it was designed by Augustus Pugin in a lofty northern Germanic style, with later additions by his son, Edward Welby, and his grandson Sebastian Pugin Powell. In 1941 it was granted the status of a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII, and the papal coat of arms may be seen over the main door. Much of the stained glass and metalwork in the cathedral was made by the local firm of John Hardman and Co, and the magnificent organ was installed in 1993.
